NOD32 Antivirus Version 3.0 Review

I recently updated from NOD32 version 2.7 to the latest NOD32 version 3.0. I found that Eset has dramatically simplified the structure of the NOD32 controls. They had been criticized in the past as creating a great product for advanced PC users.

The new version has a simplified “Standard Mode” that is much easier to use.

The Advanced Mode is still there — a simple click on the “Display: Standard mode” in the bottom left-hand corner will let you toggle into Advanced mode to enable control of many more options.

Upgrading from a previous version was easy. I uninstalled the older version, rebooted, and installed the new version. Many anti-virus programs work this way, since some of their components are installed during early parts of the Windows boot process — and not changeable without a reboot.

Then, installing was straight forward.

Once NOD32 is running, the first screen displayed is the Protection Status screen. If all is well, you see a display with a green monitor labelled Maximum Protection. If any features have been turned off or disabled, you’ll see

Using the free Google Photo Screensaver

The Google Screensaver is one of the amazing free applications that is part of Google’s free Google Pack software package.

The Google Screensaver is optional as part of Google Pack, but it’s one component that you should not miss. With it, you can have a screensaver that uses your own photos that you’ve accumulated and edited in Google Picasa, from Picasa Web Albums, from your own photos from folders on your computer that you specify (so you can use some photos as screensaver images, but not others), and from photo feeds (which defaults to “Default Google Photo Feed.”)

You can control how often the picture changes. You can also control the type of transition from one image to the next. The Visual Effect lets you choose Pan and Zoom, Collage, Wipe and Cross-Fade.

You can access the control panel for Google Screensaver in either of two ways:

Deleting documents in Office 2007 with Vista

Subscriber Ceil wrote to ask:

Hi There Terry, Is there a simple explanation as to how one deletes documents in the above (using windows office word 2007 with Vista)? I even am having no luck finding the help menu and I usually feel more savvy than this. I am lost. Thanks and thanks for this website. Ceil

Ceil,

In Word’s menu bar, right-click on the big Vista/Office logo on the left-hand side — then you can pick the option you want from the popup menu.

Lojack for Laptops

I’m sure you’ve heard about the On-Star satellite system sold by General Motors as an add-on for their automobiles. On-Star is billed as a method to give you instant access to help and even remote control of your vehicle. Lock yourself out of your car? No problem, call On-Star and they’ll unlock it for you. In a crash? They’ll call you to make sure you’re all right because the triggering of the air bags triggers a warning to them. Lost? Get directions.

Before On-Star, and still available for other autos, was a system called Lojack. It would respond to a special transmission and announce respond with its location. In other words, if it was stolen, you could get the Lojack people to locate the vehicle so it could be recovered.

Now, Absolute Software licensed the Lojack name to use with their software product Lojack for Laptops.

I’d read about it a couple times. Then, one day I noticed that Dell Computer was including it as part of the Complete Care package for their notebooks — at least on the models that I was considering.

So, I started looking at Lojack for Laptops again. The more I read, the more I liked. Just like Lojack for automobiles, Lojack for Laptops is a system designed to help recover the stolen property! They claim an 80+% recovery rate on stolen laptops versus a normal 3%.
